Dreams Come True!
by Child Welfare Board Member Natalie Mano Smart
"For three years, I dreamed about giving the kids individual birthday presents of NEW clothes and shoes that actually fit instead of (generously) donated hand-me-downs that often didn't fit. Sue Lynch, and members of the Highland Ward, in the Rancho Cucamonga Stake in Southern California, made that dream come true. Sue had each child's name, clothing and shoe sizes and they had a blast gathering so many donations her daughter Ali couldn't take it down with her on her internship. After the July expedition brought down the rest of the birthday kits, Ali and the interns had a big birthday bash for all the kids.

Thanks to all who participated for their amazing generosity!"

July Expedition!
Our July expedition took over 30 volunteers to work at the Sunflower and other communities in the Sacred Valley and Puno.
Projects at the Sunflower were focused on completing the 2nd dorm and providing directly for the children. Work included pouring cement for the 2nd floor, putting in the windows, and stuccoing the outside. The kitchen was stocked with food and new school uniforms were purchased. Wilfredo was also taken to the dentist to fix his broken tooth. All were glad to see him smile again!
In addition, Dr. John Larcabal and his team gave over 400 eye exams to children throughout the valley. For those children who didn't get the lenses they needed with the supplies brought down, glasses have been made and will be delivered as soon as possible. Clothes were donated in Puno on a Lake Titicaca visit.
We would like to thank Chuck & Jenni Kuck along with Will Love for taking the lead on this trip and making it such a rewarding experience for so many.

Southern Cross Summer Interns
Thanks for sharing yourself with so many children!
Southern Cross had 14 exceptional interns this summer in three locations in Peru: Trujillo (Northern coast),
Porcon (Cajamarca region) and at the Sunflower in Sacred Valley. We are truly grateful for all the time, service and effort our interns put into helping children in all these regions.
Southern Cross interns focus on literacy & skill development with a specific eye to find areas of talent to enhance each child's future. This summer our interns did this as well as created a website for the Aldea, created documentaries on the conditions of the children, worked with community leaders to enhance self-sustaining industries and even took part in an historical dig! (To read more go to: http://universe.byu.edu/node/1030). Most importantly, they let every child know they were loved.
Interns shown are Carrie Van Dusen (Website specialist) with children at the Aldea, below to the left is Kayla Barclay (Miss Utah & PR specialist) and to the right is Whitney Maw (BYU International Advisement Aid). A special thanks to Professor Alberto Puertas, our Board Member over our intern program, for sending such fine young men and women to represent our organization. If you are interested in an internship with Southern Cross please contact send an email to laura@sxhu.org.

Many Hands Help Southern Cross
Happy Birthday Aldea Infantil!
On August 12th, the Aldea Infantil had a birthday! Our interns and area representative, Carlos Tejeda and wife Arianna, helped with the celebration. One of the many reasons we sponsor the Aldea is because of their commitment with the local community to provide extensive educational opportunities for their disabled and emotionally
handicapped children.
Check Out Chapter President's Projects! Lacey Aukema, of Chipley Florida, has designed a blog displaying modest prom, bridal & sacred occasion dresses. Half of the proceeds will go to Southern Cross - www.dressesforchange.blogspot.com
Fred and Janet McCullough, of B.C. Canada, have a humanitarian blog with online good for sale dedicated to helping Southern Cross. Check out it out! http://fredsoutherncross.blogspot.com/ For information on how you can help the children in Peru please visit: www.sxhu.org
