Heartbeats "When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats."

· Children at El Bichito wish to send a big thanks to Victoria Elementary School students for the following: "My name is Sarah Peterson. I am a good friend of Colleen Burns. She came and shared many of her experiences in Peru with the students at my elementary school (Victoria Elementary, in Victoria, MN). I am teaching a class on world cultures this year and was so fortunate to have Colleen teach my students. Our students became very interested in the kids they heard about and wanted to do something to help make a difference in their lives. They organized a coin drive, called it Project Peru and raised $921.71 dollars. They decided they wanted to have the money go towards a new orphanage that Colleen told them about called Little Bug".
· We're grateful to the Humphries family, of Provo, UT. for donating 3 baby calves for the children of the Aldea Infantil, in Trujillo, Peru, along with 7 computers for the children in Porcon.
· Let's have another shout out for all those volunteers at Arbor School in Sammamish, WA who donated boxes and boxes of books, shoes, clothes! We still have boxes coming! again our thanks.

June Expedition & Little Bug (El Bichito)!
Our June expedition accomplished an amazing amount of progress on several projects! Thanks to Dr. Doug and Julie, and our "teen team", we now have baseline medical reports on over 60 children with their pictures. The greatest health concern found was dental. Fortunately Natalie, our hygienist, brought toothbrushes and toothpaste for all the children and lead the their first lesson in dental care.
Our hearty expedition members also hauled and stacked 5000 bricks, carried buckets of sand to create mortar for the laying of bricks, and worked on projects in Porcon at the dairy and community wood pile.
Carlos, the administrator
of the local school, came by during the week just to say "thank you"
for feeding the children at El Bichito, as it has made a noticeable difference in the
children's academic abilities. We're hoping to take 250 school kits to this
school on our August expedition to give additional aid.
At the end of the week we "rented" the lawn next door so the kids could play. It was great seeing the kids laugh, run, giggle, etc. We played volleyball, a little soccer and the big hit was a tag game where we rotated partners. We played for over an hour until the adults got too tired to continue! After the games came ice-cream for all the kids (so much for the dental hygiene lectures!)
Originally we projected the
two stories, to provide a home for 40 children, would cost $15k. It
looks like we're right on track! Thanks everyone!
This expedition was a real treat, experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Porcon and staying at Laguna Seca which features the thermal baths indigenous to this area. Macchu Pichu, donations at the Sunflower, touring Cusco and Lima brought the expedition to its end.
Please go to donations to help create this permanent home for hundreds of children now and into the future!

Southern Cross Intern Updates
Southern Cross interns are in three locations: Trujillo,
Porcon (Cajamarca region) and Sacred Valley Peru. Below are some updates from the interns in their various locations. Southern Cross works with our interns to focus on literacy & skill development. For full accounts click here to see our child blog site. Aldea Infantil (Trujillo) by Carrie Van Dusen: "The other volunteers and I joined the kindergarteners for marches through the Plaza de Armas of nearby cities for National Initial Education Week. How super cute to see these 4 year olds carrying signs that say "I like waking up for jardin!" "To be a child is to be marvelous." "Listen to me, I'm important." "Small people of the future." We had journalists and photographers come and take pictures of the march and even some important person speak (though I wasn't paying much attention-I was chasing kids and making sure they didn't hit each other with their picket signs). I love seeing everyone, right down to our little huddle of 4 year olds, take their education so seriously and love it." (To read more of Carrie's entries please see the blog!) Granja Porcon (Cajamarca Region): Brian Walker was a real trooper taking a big step where no one else would ever tread. As an expedition, everyone was glad he found a certain pile and fell into it instead of anyone else. THANKS BRIAN for taking that one for the team!
