The Life of Carlos
by Carlos
Carlos1
(Dictated to & translated by Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
My name is Carlos. I am sixteen years old. I like to travel to different cities in this country. I would also like to have a car so I could drive to all the cities. I want to be a great soccer player in the future and help the poor just like they helped me. I like to eat chicken and pizza. I also like cookies and eggs. Someday I want to have a bike.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Cuzco. I have a family, but I don't know where they are. Someone told me they are in another city. I remember living on the street and helping my mother when I was young, but then the police came for me and took me to the Colibri home in Lucre, sponsored by Southern Cross. I liked it because I had many friends and there were teachers who cared for us every day.

Now
When Colibri closed I came to live in the home of The Sunflower. In this home I have food, a bed, and water, a greenhouse and plenty of corn. We have everything we need thanks to Papi Leonidas. My day in this home is wonderful. I help with a few things that I can, but everyone helps. This place is beautiful. I feel happy here because I play with all of my friends. We play soccer. Everyone is happy because there are many wonderful things here.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home where we live and help each other. The Sunflower is important because we have a mother and a father.  They care for us all day.  We also have many important things.  The Sunflower is important to me because we have a dad, mom, and Aunt Colleen who teaches us things to prepare us for school.  To me, The Sunflower is a house where we live and have everything we need for our lives and work.

My Future

First, I want to complete my studies.  When I graduate from school, I will leave, work a lot, and earn money so I can buy a house.   I want to be a great soccer player and meet Ronaldo among other soccer players in the world. Maybe I can be a doctor too.

Please click here to help Carlos with his future.

Can't make the banquet?  Please consider donating as a matching grant to help reach our BIG Goals!

#1 - Fund Futures - One of our greatest needs is to secure futures for our older children at the Sunflower Home. Their futures are now! Currently we have $5000 waiting for matching grants.  Len & Lesa England will match each dollar you donate up to $5000. If we receive $50, they donate $50.  If we receive $5000 designated for this fund, they will donate $5000! Please meet this challenge so we don't lose this money! To donate you can mail in a check, call the office or use our online paypal and specify the cause. For more information you can email and please visit our new Funding Futures page on the website.

#2 - Sustainability - Last year we made enough money to pour the last dorm's foundation and make significant progress on the farm. This year we need to begin the final stages of completing the Sunflower home so we can provide more children with sustainable homes.

For more information on donating as a matching grant, please email Laura@sxhu.org.

Heartbeats!
summerinterns
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats."

· Congratulations
to Natalie Mano and Tony Smart who were married
on August 28th in beautiful California. The rsvp note in their invitation said, "in lieu of gifts we'd be honored with a donation to Southern Cross or the charity of your choice."  We are very appreciative to Nat & Tony for choosing Southern Cross Humanitarian as their charity of choice in lieu of wedding gifts.  Thank you!

· Big appreciation for Tyson Frischknecht from Riverton, UT. for his Eagle Scout project of well prepared back packs for the incoming children of the Sunflower  and near-by Drop-in centers.
What a great job he did for this much needed project.  When children arrive at our homes, they usually come with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Those packs give them a small bundle they can call their own and something new for their fresh start.

· Fred and Janet McCullough, Southern Cross Chapter Presidents in Cowichan Valley in Duncan, B.C. on Vancouver Island,  came up with "COINS FOR COWS".  These coin containers raised over $300 in a couple weeks!  Thanks to everyone up north! Your help is greatly appreciated down south!

· Young men and women of the LDS Haight Creek church in Kaysville, UT., put together a garage sale to sponsor  Dayana at the Sunflower Home.  Thanks for all your time and effort!

Thank you all for your support and for communicating your desires and efforts in helping Southern Cross Humanitarian.  THANKS!  laura@sxhu.org.

Here is How to Make a HUGE Difference with No Cost to You!

colombia6

Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.

By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross. This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a big difference!

All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org or complete the registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.

This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.
Do you shop at Amazon, Ebay or iTunes?
Use
www.goodsearch.com

It costs you nothing, yet each time you search they pay Southern Cross Humanitarian a penny.  Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU!  Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower each year.
