New Colombian Drop-in Centers!
Mariquita & Palocabildo!

Mariquita is situated in the heart of Colombia, to the north of Tolima. An inauguration including local dancers, the town honor band, and honorary speakers preceded a parade to the new Drop-In Center.
colombia1This center used to be the mayor's office and comes equipped with a small library, medical office, and recreation area including full kitchen. Towns people welcomed SXHU with open arms and are excited to partner with an colombia2American charity to facilitate helping their children in need. Currently over 120 children are already registered at the Mariquita Drop-in center where they are feed and provided with academic and skill based mentoring.

Palocabildo is a beautiful town and municipality nestled atop fields, in the Tolima regions of Colombia, that Americans associate with "Juan Valdez" and coffee plantations.colombia4Palocabildo has seen its share of political strife in the past, but today all eyes look to the future. Our new home feeds almost 100 children and will soon have additional social services to facilitate emotional needs as well.

We need your help! Sponsoring these Drop-In centers, either in their entirety for $1000 a month or for $30 as a team sponsor, will be the key to provide for literally hundreds of children on an ongoing basis. For more information please contact laura@sxhu.org, or see  www.sxhu.org.

The Life of Yosimar
By Yosimar
Yosimar1
(Dictated to & translated by 2007-08 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
I am Yosimar. I am eight years old. I like to work with tools. I also like to watch sharks and fish.  I am a good-looking and well-behaved boy.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Puerto Maldonado.  I grew up with my brothers. I came here about 1 year ago. A lawyer brought me here because I was a poor and suffering boy. I left for here because I was hit a lot. It is my story. It is not the case here at the orphanage.

Now
Now, I live at The Sunflower.  Here, I have a television and DVD player. Every day we bathe, play, and work.  Here, I feel good.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a beautiful home with good parents. The Sunflower is important because there are many good children. I like this place because it is very beautiful with decorations and plants.

My Future
After high school, I want to drive a car in Cusco. I also want to have a house, family, television, DVD player, a bed, a bedroom, a radio, a Spanish-English dictionary, a book room, a drawing room, and a chalkboard for drawing.

Currently Yosimar needs and operation for a hearing defect.  We are hoping to make this happen this coming summer. SXHU thanks Yosimar's sponsors. Because of you, he has a future: www.sxhu.org

Mark your calendars for September 26th and the SXHU 2nd annual reunion/fundraising banquet! We've got fun things in store and look forward to seeing you all there!
Captivating colombia5Colombia!

Colombia was a sweet surprise. Our talented Colombian director, Rosario Meneses, along with her vibrant and delightful SXHU Board, put together two amazing inaugurations in Palocabildo (parade below) and Mariquita for visiting SXHU members. The centers were inviting, clean, friendly and brilliantly run. (These women are incredible). We were extremely impressed, and touched, by the hard work, excitement, warmth and participation of each community.

  band
We also visited areas of Barranquilla and Cartagena, where SXHU may add new homes and centers, as well as our Turbaco Drop-In center. Rosita (Colombia Director asst and Social Worker) was invited to the Cartagena mayor's office where SXHU was offered up to 17 new homes.  Although the government has buildings and land available, it lacks the means to organize and run charitable centers.

Why Colombia? Here are a few of the answers we received when asking the Colombian people why they needed SXHU to come into their country:
"All children need the loving arms of mothers - you are substitute mothers."
"The best hugs are not the ones of man, but from God - you are his arms."
"The mind of a child is a white piece of paper.  Together we can write their new history."
"These children have a lot of limitations, but working together with Southern Cross, we can mitigate that."
"We Colombians tend to be spiritually based - we have dreams and ideas.
Americans bring ideas to reality.  When Americans come with their organizational skills, we are able to get more done."
"We don't need preachers.  We need people who WORK for God... people who work for God do things well.
"We have prayed you here."

Heartbeats!
LeoBD
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable
heartbeats"

· Happy Birthday dear Leo, happy birthday to you!!!! From all of us here at SXHU, happy 43rd! Leo Gavancho, our Peruvian Director, is an example & inspiration to us all; admired and loved for his hard work and tireless efforts to help the children of his country, we are honored to call him family and friend.

·
Southern Cross Humanitarian would like to extend a big hand of thanks to the following past SXHU board members for their years of service: Dave Evans of Taylorsville, UT., Joanie Daily of Holladay, UT., Rhonda Parsons of Logan, UT., Brooke Larkins of Atherton, CA., Holiday Van Schiver of Show Low, AZ. Their contributions have laid the foundation for our humanitarian efforts.

· Congratulations Nicki Hugie for her
successful marathon! Nicki will be going to Colombia this summer as our first intern working there.

· A warm thank you to Burton Elementary, of Kaysville, UT., for having SXHU as their designated charity at their recent
Scholastic Book Fair. Customers donated loose change to "One for Books" where Scholastic then gives one book for each dollar earned to the charity of the school's choosing.  We loved all the new Spanish editions!

· SXHU would like to give a big shout out to the Vista First Ward, in Vista, California, for raising money towards the purchase of a cow or other animal for the Sunflower farm. Please let us know how we can help you help Southern Cross.

Thank you all for your support and for communicating your desires and efforts in helping SXHU.  THANKS!  laura@sxhu.org.

Here is How to Make a HUGE Difference with No Cost to You!

Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.

By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross. This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a big difference!

All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org or complete the registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.

This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.
