New Children at
Sunflower Home:
Hilda is the newest child at our Sunflower home. She is 8 years old, says she likes to eat meat, noodles and fruit, especially mandarin oranges. (They are currently in season and delicious!) Hilda is smiley, shy, quiet, and sweet.
Hilda also enjoys reading and playing volleyball with the rest of the kids at the home. She wants to go to the university some day and become a Veterinarian. Hilda's mom is sick and dying with tuberculosis and she and her husband cannot afford to feed their five kids. They have asked us to take their children, starting with Hilda, and asked that three more come after this school season ends. Currently Hilda's brother Marco lives with Juan's family at his house in Yucay.
Sponsoring Hilda would be a treat for anyone, especially if you get the chance to go down on an Expedition and meet her. She is a real jewel and would appreciate your help. You can sponsor a child by going to our website at www.sxhu.org.

Spotlight:

El Girasol (The Sunflower)
by Yeri
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)
Who am I?
I am Yeri (Jerry). I'm five years old. (We actually think he is 7 based on his medical records). I like to sweep my room. It's good to have a clean room. I also like to draw, study, and read. My favorite book is "Maquinas, Maquinas" (Machines, Machines). It is wonderful. I like to color. My favorite color is red. Markers, colored pencils, and my shirt are red. I work a lot with tools and I like to eat. My favorite food is noodles.
Before The Sunflower
I was born in Madre del Dios and grew up in Puerto Maldonado in the jungle. There were lots of Toucans in the jungle. I lived with my brothers Joel, Edy and my mom. I don't know my dad. In the jungle, we didn't have much food. Therefore, my mom brought me here.
Now
Now, I live at the orphanage. Here, I have bread, cake, and toys. I like my backpack a lot. Every day, I make my bed. I also fold my clothes and go to class. I learn to color. I clean my room. Here, I feel happy.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a place with all the children. There are clothes, beds, new clothes, food, and Papi Leonidas. I like The Sunflower because Mami Eunice is good. Papi Juan and Mami Delia care for us.
My Future
After high school, I want to study at a university. I am going to study English. After university, I want to work with rocks. I will throw rocks. I don't know where I want to live, but I want to travel to Cusco.

June Expeditions
& Projects Update!:
June Expeditions rocked! What an amazing bunch of hard and fun workers. Projects completed include:
· Gate - We are thrilled to finally have a door on our Sunflower home we can lock at night to protect our children. Thanks to all who made this possible. The kids enjoy Gate duty!
· Dental & Medical Clinic! - Our dental and medical rooms are operational and the amazing team from Wings World Wide - The Air Medical Foundation, began
working immediately! Not only did they treat and update the records of all our Sunflower children, they also took their show on the road treating over 120 children and community members in various settings, including Patacancha. Even at 13,000 plus feet, these dental workers worked tirelessly to make a lifetime of difference. Their smiles say it all.
· Intern rooms - Our first apartment is painted, furnished and is now home to our 3 summer interns.
· Kits - Over 200 school kits were distributed, 125 mothers had training with newborn kits and 75 hygiene kits were handed out during classes. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to make and supply these kits, especially Tanner on the June trip who brought down 75 newborn kits which were made for his Eagle Scout project.
· Electricity pole holes! Unless you've ever dug holes in cement like conditions yourself, the 7 holes dug for electrical lines might not be fully appreciated. Big thank you goes to Bill and the whole gang for their back breaking work!
· P.J's - Pajamas were cut and sized for all the children at the orphanage thanks to Karen Aukama and helpers. Karen left a sewing machine at the orphanage to finish all the nightware. For all the children, it is their first set of P.J's.
· Pathway - Many river rocks found a new home thanks to a huge team effort. Rebecca Berry, your initial design work on our pathway was especially appreciated!
· New Mattresses and covers - Thanks to a secret donor, we have new mattresses and covers for all the children at the orphanage. This, in combination with the new showers and P.J's, helps implement a new routine which is another step up the hygiene ladder.
· Bathrooms! Ahhh! Last, but not least! They're finished, beautiful and will soon be operating at FULL capacity! Our new interns are now training the children how to use, clean and maintain them during shower rotations. Thanks to all those who made this possible with their fundraising efforts!

Southern Cross
Happenings:
· Interns at Sunflower! Melinda Martin, Annie Lakey and Annie Pointer are all volunteering time to help Southern Cross Humanitarian. Interns make a huge difference with their consistency with hygiene, homework, therapy and care. Miracles of change happen; we see it every day.
· Families who work together stay together... or something like that! Whatever it is, when expedition participants and Sunflower children work side by side, we all begin to feel like one family. We greatly appreciate everyone who makes the work on expeditions a team effort and we'd like to give a big thanks to our Sunflower children as well!

· Sign up your friends and neighbors for an Albertsons Community Partners program or take one of our 3 last spots in the St. George Marathon! Both are some of the ways you can help SXHU this summer. Scroll through our entire How Can I Help/Donations page for more info. http://sxhu.org/donationform.html |

Heartbeats!
"When people donate
their time, they are
giving of their valuable heartbeats"
·Jenny's Garden -
Our dear friend Jenny Oman of Mapleton, UT, passed away in June. We created Jenny's Garden in tribute to the beauty Jenny brought to our home. We love you Jenny.....
· Thank you Amador Valley High School Athletic Booster Club of Pleasanton, CA, for your generous donation to sponsor children through Southern Cross. The kids also love the shirts / uniforms donated by the Girls Lacrosse Team.
· Rebecca Berry of San Mateo, CA, is sponsoring the therapy of Marcos. This money will allow Marcos and his mom to travel to Cusco twice a week and to see a specialist for Cystic Fibrosis therapy. In addition, she brought down some amazing "I Am" materials for art time with the children. Thanks for all your help Rebecca.
· April Goodwin of Phoenix, AZ, contacted Trader Joes, who donated much needed vitamins, and brought them down on the Dental Expedition. These are the first vitamins we've had in bulk at our home. We so appreciate this important health contribution.
· Pamela Kump of Florida, took one for the team when she fractured her ankle on the 1st June expedition just so we all could have fun painting her cast. What a sport! (-:) Thanks Dr. Jeremy for being there!
· Shelley South Stake Youth & leader Doreen Fredrickson, of Shelley, ID, collected over 600 names and numbers, during a Humanitarian weekend, to register Albertson's cards for Southern Cross! This will could mean thousands of dollars for years to come for our organization. Thank you Shelley Youth!!!
· Congratulations to Spencer Black of SLC, UT, for earning a Service Scholar award under Joanie Daily at Skyline High. We appreciate and are honored Spencer took two expeditions to Peru with SXHU. Loving and serving others by raising money for our kitchen supplies, and of course the outfitting an entire school through his Eagle Scout project, certainly seems a commendable way to spend High School summers!
Please let us know when you'd like to do a SXHU fundraiser. We have lots of support available and people ready to help you. For more info email laura@sxhu.org.

WE'RE AT $180 AND CLIMBING!
Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU! Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search. It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay SXHU a penny. It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.
Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. Remember to enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.
